If you have a website and nobody finds it, does it exist? Well, it does exist, but only for the people you tell about it. Your domain name, URL, is on your business card and your stationary, so people see that, look up your domain, and say oh, what a nice site?
If the service or product you offer is only to be offered to select people, then an un-findable domain is fine. But if you want people to find you, when they are looking for a service, then you need search engine optimization.
Search engine optimization (SEO) is what makes your site show up when people are searching for something on Google, Bing and Yahoo.
Some SEO can happen naturally. Google sees words on your site that inform Google what your site is about. Other websites link to your site as it contains information they want to share with others. People post about your site in social media and that post gets shared. That’s the way Google wants it.
But natural SEO takes time, it can take years. And, for a lot of sites, it never happens. The site is built wrong. Nobody knows the site exists. You don’t get linked to or shared on social media. You beautiful site is only seen by people you tell about it.
The option is to do SEO for a site, purposefully. Examine and modify the site to optimize it for Google, so Google knows what your site is about, without over doing it and looking unnatural. Add content to the site that is good for the potential client and also tells Google what you want to be found for. Build links to the site so Google thinks others like the site, without looking unnatural . Get the site shared on social media, in an organic, natural manner.
Depending on how competitive your niche is, it can take a few days, weeks or months to get found on Google. If you offer an esoteric service in a small town and nobody else is offering that service and nobody else is competing with your site for Google’s first page, you can “get ranked” pretty quickly. If you are offering a valuable service in a competitive niche in a big city, it can take a while to get on the first page of Google.
SEO can make or break a business. Being on the first page of Google gives a business exposure. If you offer a service or product, and you aren’t already consistently busy with clients or customers that are optimal for you, you might need some SEO.
